The idea of exact realism and painting - page 501 – Of Human Bondage, the comment is about El Greco.
” The painter had painted exactly what he saw, but he had seen with the eyes of the spirit”
The exactitude of visual arts realism has been the subject of a discussion regarding my design for the windows dedicated to the Virgin Mary which I create for St Luke’s Church. If it refers to a human body, then the exact realism seems to be commonly expected as a demonstration of one’s ability to render what the body is visually known as for its proportions.
Proportions more than reliefs or textures are expected right. Have you experienced with great surprise (from someone you expected to have opened their mind to what artists and viewers gained from movements of the C19th and C20th) , comments about proportions in an artwork for a spitritual subject based on the human body ?
Porportion, as a part considered in comparative relation to a whole, is the appropriate ground of experiment for a spiritual theme.
